Gary Furlong
B.A., LL.M. (ADR), C.Med
Mediator, facilitator, author, and one of Canada's most experienced labour relations practitioners.

Gary Furlong has extensive experience in labour mediation, conflict resolution, negotiation, training, organizational facilitation, and alternative dispute resolution. Gary is Past President of the ADR Institute of Ontario, and is a Master of Laws (LL.M. - ADR) graduate from Osgoode Hall Law School. Gary was recently awarded the McGowan Award of Excellence in ADR by the ADR Institute of Canada. Gary is the author or co-author of BrainFishing – A Practice Guide to Questioning Skills (Friesen Press 2018), The Conflict Resolution Toolbox (Wiley, Second Edition 2020), and Strategic Negotiation: Building Organizational Excellence (Routledge, 2023).


As a mediator, Gary has worked in the areas of labour relations, workplace, wrongful dismissal, commercial, personal injury, and construction. Gary specializes in intervening in difficult organizational and workplace disputes. Gary has mediated poisoned work environments, harassment, and dysfunctional work team issues, ranging in size from two-party disputes to groups of over 200 individuals. Gary has mediated many collective agreements, labour board complaints and grievance issues, and specializes in return-from-strike facilitation. Gary has worked with a wide range of companies in the private sector, in the public sector with municipalities, provincial governments and the federal government, and with unions including the Unifor, Teamsters, CUPE, ONA, OPSEU, ETFO, SEIU, PSAC and IBEW. Gary conducts Relationship by Objectives intervention work to improve union/management relations and specializes in joint union/management bargaining training with a wide range of unions and employers.


Gary has worked with the Queen’s University Industrial Relations Department conducting research into employment models of dispute resolution in Canadian companies, and taught a number of labour-related courses at the Queen’s University Industrial Relations Centre for over 20 years. Gary also teaches in the LL.M program at Osgoode Hall Law School. Gary is a principal with Agree Dispute Resolution, and is a graduate of Stanford University in California.
